Wetlands are often referred to as an ecotone, a transitional zone between an upland and aquatic ecosystem. Because of their unique landscape setting, wetlands provide many important functions and values, only a few of which include: recreation, water filtration, wildlife habitat, and carbon sequestration. Restoration of these dynamic systems requires a comprehensive understanding of hydrological conditions, vegetation communities, soil conditions, and the interactions in between. Coldwater scientists have extensive experience in the wetland field and with wetland restoration projects, including emergent wetlands, forested swamps, scrub-shrub wetlands, calcareous fens, vernal pools, groundwater-fed wetlands, and constructed/treatment wetlands.
