Municipal Green Infrastructure/Stormwater
Green infrastructure is typically defined as any natural or engineered stormwater management system that mimics natural processes and mitigates the impact of stormwater runoff on receiving waters. Green infrastructure solutions are intended to control the quantity and quality of stormwater runoff, while providing ancillary benefits such as improved wildlife habitat, aesthetic appeal, and urban heat island mitigation. Green infrastructure techniques can be applied in both separate and combined sewer systems.
Coldwater works closely with our clients to provide specialized services for a variety of green infrastructure and stormwater management projects. Our interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers is able to draw upon a wealth of experience in wastewater and stormwater engineering, watershed planning, and ecological restoration in order to determine how to best achieve your stormwater management goals. Whether it’s development of stormwater detention areas, reduction of combined sewer overflows, or community-wide evaluation of green infrastructure alternatives, we can provide the most cost-effective, sustainable solutions to maximize the benefits to the community and surrounding environment.
Our team has extensive experience preparing "business case" evaluations for green infrastructure projects, including alternatives analyses, triple bottom line evaluations, life-cycle cost analyses, and cost/benefit analyses. These evaluations utilize criteria such as costs, water quality goals, water quantity goals, public perception, habitat benefits and maintenance concerns in order to create real-world, multi-objective solutions for stormwater management. Coldwater has found these evaluations to be critical in establishing consistent, quantifiable benefits for using green infrastructure.
Coldwater has experience in the evaluation and design of a multitude of green infrastructure solutions, including rain gardens, constructed wetlands, bio-retention swales, curb cut depressions, planter boxes, riparian buffers, pervious pavement, and urban reforestation. Coldwater also provides complementary design services in the areas of wetland restoration, native vegetation planting plans, invasive species control, natural channel design, and stream stabilization.
